International Clinical Case Discussion Summer School (ICDSS)

International Clinical Case Discussion Summer School (ICDSS): Two weeks, two exciting cases per day—discussed with students from LMU, TU, and US partner universities, as well as renowned professors. Train your clinical thinking, improve your English, and experience a unique teaching and leisure program.

Overview

Concept

The International Clinical Case Discussion School (ICCDS) is based on the American format of clinical case presentations (Clinical Case Discussion Rounds, CDR), which are firmly anchored in the curriculum there. During the two-week ICCDS, two cases from the New England Journal of Medicine are discussed in English each day. The aim is to work together to develop a clinical diagnosis for a case and to train structured clinical thinking.

The focus is on questions such as:

  • Which symptoms are relevant in this case?
  • What differential diagnoses do I need to consider?
  • When should I perform which diagnostic test?
  • What is the treatment for the respective disease?

One participant prepares the case as a presentation, while the moderator from the ICCDS team leads the discussion. The group is supported by renowned professors from the USA and other guest lecturers from TUM and LMU, who comment on the roundtable as experts and share their clinical experience.

Procedure

All participants prepare a case presentation in advance according to the established CDR (TUM) or CCD (LMU) scheme. During the two-week school, two cases per day are discussed from Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. In addition, a joint leisure program takes place in the evenings and on weekends.

Participants

A maximum of 10 students per faculty (TUM/LMU) can participate in the ICCDS to ensure a good student-teacher ratio and personal contact with the lecturers. A total of 45 students from TUM, LMU, and the US partner universities will participate. Medical students from Johns Hopkins University, Washington University in St. Louis, and Weill Cornell Medical College will also be guests.

Guest lecturers

Professors from Johns Hopkins University, Washington University in St. Louis, and Weill Cornell Medical College will participate as guest lecturers from the United States. In addition, professors from both Munich faculties will enrich the case discussions on individual days.

Application

Please submit the following documents (in a single PDF file)

  • Short letter of motivation for participation, stating your current semester
  • Indication of willingness to host US students as guests for one or two weeks
  • If applicable, information on previous participation in CDR
